Sharing Christ at Christmas

My passion is seeing children love and trust Jesus and the best people to introduce a child to Christ are his or her parents. I asked a mother of 3 children between the ages of 3 and 10 what her greatest deterrent was in sharing the gospel with her family. She replied that she simply didn’t know the language to use in order to present the gospel in a way that her children could understand.
I have found that is the case for most parents. Most parents aren’t able to sit down and give significant time and thought to how to share the gospel in language their children understand. Most parents don’t have the chance to think of creative ways to talk about Jesus. Since I do, I wrote out a gospel presentation for children.
The Christmas holiday provides parents with a unique opportunity to share the gospel. On a day that is different from every other day in the year, a day where the family settles down together over a meal or in front of a fireplace, children take notice of the change in attitude and atmosphere. They can see that something is different, that the mood is altered and that it is a time to celebrate something special.
I invite you to take the opportunity over Christmas breakfast or dinner to very clearly and intentionally share the gospel. More than just the story of Jesus’ birth, we want our children to hear the story of his life, death and resurrection. Your story can go something like this:
What was your favorite gift this year? Do you know why we give gifts?
We give gifts because we want to show our love to one another and because we want to celebrate our family and this day. We give gifts because we learned from God that there is joy in giving and receiving. The greatest gift we can ever receive is not a great toy or new clothes. The greatest gift we can ever receive is the gift of Jesus Christ and eternal life with Him.
God sent his son as a baby. He was born in a simple way and he lived a perfect, simple, sinless life. Jesus walked on this earth as a man. He felt hunger and anger and sadness. He experienced what every person experiences. Jesus was fully man and fully God. Jesus came to die.
God is perfect, but people are not. Because people sin, because we do bad things, we are separate from God. The only way sinful people can get to be with our perfect God is if we accept the gift of Jesus’ death on the cross.
We deserve to be punished for our sins. Jesus died to pay the punishment for the sin we do. Because Jesus is God, His death can cover the sins of all people who love and trust Him.  So the greatest gift we can ever receive is the gift of Jesus’ death on the cross so that we can be with God forever.
Those who love and trust Jesus, who follow Him all their lives, accept the gift Jesus gave when He died on the cross. When we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate the birth of the perfect baby Jesus and we celebrate his death on the cross to give us a way to God.
Do you love and trust Jesus? Do you accept the gift He gave us when He died on the cross to pay for our sins? Do you want to love Him with all your heart for the rest of your life and trust Him to care for you and lead you? Do you want to follow Him and His teaching? Let’s pray together as a family.
