Seasons

As we approach the end of 2007 I find myself reflecting on our accomplishments as a church. I thank God for each person that has come to Christ this year, each marriage we’ve seen restored and each child we’ve baptized. But I still have this nagging feeling that we could do things better. As I search the Scriptures for the purpose of a local church I found a beautiful description of what our mission should look like:

“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:5-6, ESV)

We are to live in such harmony with one another and with Christ that we may glorify God “with one voice.” This means we, as Providence Church, must find ways to unify our voice and our mission as we work to glorify God. While our individual responsibility to glorify God personally is not diminished, the Bible clearly indicates an equal responsibility to unify our attempts with other children of God.

In an attempt to unify our “voice” we have instituted “seasons” here at Providence. These seasons will help concentrate our efforts in a particular area of ministry and hopefully unify our prayers, talents and efforts. Each season will begin and end with a Covenant & Communion Service in which we will pray, set goals and thank God for his faithfulness. We will then take communion as a physical symbol of unifying with Christ and the church during this season.

Let us join together and glorify God with one voice. Let’s put aside our fractured efforts at changing the world and come together with Christ and his church to glorify God together. As these seasons come and go my prayer is that we are led into deeper and deeper community with each other and deeper and deeper communion with God.
